KOM Networks announces optical device support for the DEC OSF/1 Operating System

Ottawa ON, Canada – January 2, 1995
KOM Networks
the industry-leading pioneer and developer of optical storage software interface products since 1984, announced the production release of OptiFile-II and OptiServer-II for the DEC OSF/1 Open Systems operating system environments today.

OptiFile-II is a software interface that provides transparent operating system and application program access to industry standard 5.25" multi-function, 12" & 14" Write-Once optical disk drives. Each standalone and daisy-chained optical drive appear as a standard magnetic disk drive to the OSF/1 user environment, ensuring compatibility, with no changes, to existing application software. Complete with a "C" callable subroutine library for custom application development, OptiFile-II is the most robust and cost effective optical disk drive interface available for the OSF/1 environment.

OptiServer-II is a software interface that provides transparent access to a wide variety of 5.25", 12" & 14" Autochanger and Jukebox library storage products. OptiServer-II provides complete flexibility to your application requirements for the management and tuning of jukebox contention parameters such as media swapping and exchange time, optical drive idle and "hog" time, as well as partitioning and ownership of optical media volumes and optical drives. OptiServer-II presents each optical media as a logically mounted magnetic disk drive to the OSF/1 user. Both OptiFile-II and OptiServer-II maximize your investment in both optical hardware and media by providing a native OSF/1 UNIX file format on each optical media, while maintaining support for future compatibility of media in next generation optical drive types. Supporting both Erasable and Write-Once media, OptiFile-II and OptiServer-II provide total flexibility for applications requiring both intermediate and long term storage in a single hierarchical environment.

Successfully tested by DEC in both the U.S. and Canada, OptiFile-II and OptiServer-II for OSF/1 is available for all DEC ALPHA AXP platforms ranging from DEC3000 series thru the DEC10000 Enterprise Server.

Headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, with U.S. Sales and Support offices in Nashua, NH and Los Angeles, CA., KOM Networks offers international "one stop shopping" for the largest variety of optical storage interfaces for the DEC VMS, Ultrix and OSF/1 platforms, as well as HP-UX, SunOS, Solaris-486, Solaris Sparc and Windows NT operating systems environments.

OptiFile-II and OptiServer-II software licenses are available for Distributor, Reseller and OEM customers, with a wide variety of customer marketing programs to fit your business needs of today and tomorrow.
