KOM Networks Announces Broad Authoring Support of the Sony Professional Disc for Data (PDD) Drive
Ottawa ON, Canada – February 13, 2004
KOM Networks, a global leader in archiving, storage management software and Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) solutions, today announced support of the SONY Professional Disc for Data (PDD) drive for their KOMworx Enterprise Edition and KOMworx OptiStorm Edition products. Both KOMworx Enterprise and OptiStorm Editions now allow users the ability to transparently migrate and/or archive any data within their network onto a PDD drive.
"KOMworx Enterprise Edition delivers flexible data protection policies that are crucial to preserving digital assets and information throughout the various data lifecycles," said Nancy Marrone-Hurley of the Enterprise Storage Group. "Organizations should look for open standards based ILM solutions in order to develop business continuance policies. KOMworx support of industry standard technologies and open UDF format allows for very flexible ILM deployments, eliminating vendor lock in that often occur with existing data preservation schemes.
"KOMworx OptiStorm takes the complicated task of managing a magneto-optical jukebox and made it simple enough for non-technical users" writes Imaging Magazine. KOMworx OptiStorm Edition combines all the advantages of optical storage while transparently retaining the access, convenience and functionality of hard disk drives. The capability of readily integrating into any application renders users completely unaware they are accessing optical disks or jukeboxes.
PDD technology, both PDD-RW and PDD-WO, is revolutionizing the storage industry with its greater storage capacity of 23 GB on one side of a standard 120mm optical disc. This 23 GB capacity is approximately 3 times that of MO, and 5 times that of DVD-RW. In addition to increased storage capacity, PDD technology offers a higher tilt tolerance, enhancing reliability for read/write operations and has a maximum write speed 2 times that of DVD-RW and 1.5 times that of MO.
"…. Quotes about KOMworx and PDD technology….."
KOMworx PDD support utilizes the Universal Disk Format (UDF) on the authored volumes, ensuring compatibility across platforms and extended access to archived information independent changes in the underlying infrastructure. The UDF support in KOMworx enables instantaneous access to archived information in the most widely supported cross-platform industry format for removable permanent storage archives.

Through the use a highly efficient embedded engine, KOMworx enables files and information to be seamlessly protected and archived without disrupting access to information. It eliminates the administrative costs associated with identifying the important files and documents and updating the users and applications on how to access them once they are archived and secured.
