Archive Storage

Backup is NOT Archive Storage

archive storage

Archiving is putting your valuable data (regulated data, business-critical data, historical data, old projects, experiment results, etc.) in a safe place where you know it is protected. And if the archive is replicated to offsite secure storage, it no longer needs to be backed up because it is already safe and accessible. KOMpliance keeps your digital assets, available anytime you need them, but stored at the lowest cost and highest protection level.

Archiving, by definition, is important in the compliance world. Regulatory requirements will determine the amount of time data is archived, as well as the requirements surrounding archiving. These include how long the data needs to be kept, how quickly the data needs to be recovered and how it must be destroyed. Regulatory requirements will also determine the protection level and medium on which data is stored, such as data encryption and WORM (Write Once Read Many) storage.

As a general rule regulations require that archive storage be:

  • Permanent - Archived records must be stored for long periods of time. These retention periods vary based on applicable regulations, industry sectors, and record categories. It is not unusual for retention periods to stretch over years, decades, or to even be essentially "forever."
  • Tamper-proof - Archived records cannot be altered in any way. SEC Rule 17a-4(f)(2)(ii) for instance, states that the electronic storage media must, "Preserve the records exclusively in a non-rewriteable, non-erasable format;..."
  • Secure - Archived records must be protected from unauthorized access and their contents must be kept private. For example, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Sec. 501 (b) (1) requires companies, "to insure the security and confidentiality of customer records and information;" and in Sec. 501 (b) (3), "to protect against unauthorized access to or use of such records or information which could result in substantial harm or inconvenience to any customer..."
